With deep reverence and gratitude to my Beloved.

My passion for creating art strengthened when I studied abroad at Oxford for my Masters and PhD. This was the time I delved into my own identity, where through my art I was able to define who I was – as a Kaur. Art was a way that provided me solace and strength to imagine my identity as myself, as a female artist.

I am a self-taught artist. Even though I have been an Educator all these years, I always found time to draw and paint. After oils, I tried water colors and then portraits. This became my passion. When my children were young and at home there was not much time but I used any free time like my lunchtime to do some art. I started with portraits of the spiritual masters (Bhai Sahib Bhai Vir Singh and Professor Puran Singh). I was in love with their teachings and guidance and felt close to them as I drew them. As my readings grew to include other such great souls – like Bauji Jaswant Singh, Friedrich Nietzche, Soren Kierkegaard, I continued to draw.

One time after attending a spiritual retreat I felt deeply moved by the intensity and the beauty of a picture of a hummingbird drawing nectar from a flower. As I immersed myself into it I just picked up a pen and started writing “Waheguru” – the mantra mentioned in all my art. This was because I felt His Divine Presence in the bird and the surroundings and this was the only way I could depict it on paper. I let my heart rule and let it take me wherever it wanted to. I later filled in the whole page with the mantra and it looked beautiful to me.

Making art quiets the busy mind and lets the deep sacred silence shine through.
In that quiet space, the artist and the art become one single thing.

As we release judgment, silence our mind, breathe deep into the process, and find bliss in each step; we realize that we are boundlessly assisted in our authentic and heart-centered expression. We step out of the way. We realize that the Art is not born of us, but through us, and in this understanding we are humbled, yet profoundly empowered.

I believe that it is our divine duty to create and share inspiration. In the creative process I find stillness and rhythm, my teacher and passion. With intention, I aim to share and to celebrate this fantastic adventure; to inspire and be inspired. Each image takes me on a journey as I follow the brush strokes; each time I am lead back to my centre. My hope is that my paintings be a mirror, a reflection of your universal light, your human essence, and your timeless divinity.

I pray that my paintings be a mirror, a reflection of your light, your human essence, and your timeless divinity.

With Love and Gratitude,
Juss

Questions for Juss Kaur

To understand mantra art, one must first ask: what is a mantra? This Sanskrit word is derived from two roots — man meaning "mind" or "to think", and tra meaning "to protect", "to free from", or "instrument". A mantra is a tool of the mind used to free itself.

Mantra art is a way of turning inwards to the source of creativity, allowing us to get in touch with and expand our true inner selves. Art is not born of us but through us.

My pathway to art opened while I was a teacher making sketch drawings as my students wrote exams. The Waheguru chant from a meditation retreat was still reverberating in my mind. Instinctively, I picked up a pen and began writing the mantra within the drawing, allowing it to flow into a beautiful pattern.

As I filled the image, I became deeply drawn to it — it reminded me of the particle nature of the universe. Everything is made of vibrating particles, of energy. My scientific background merged with the understanding that all is part of the One: Sabh Gobind Hai, Sabh Gobind Hai, Gobind Bin Nahi Koe.

Depending on the size, some paintings can take up to six months to complete. Each artwork is imbued with as many as 60,000 handwritten mantras, representing Omnipresence and the interconnected nature of all existence.

Each new creation becomes my favourite because every piece reveals something new. However, The Tree of Love holds a particularly special place in my heart — it was my first large Mantra Art painting and later adorned my son's wedding card.

Bringing that elusive "what it is" to light has been a lifelong process of discovery where art and faith are deeply intertwined.

Yes. Every mantra is written completely freehand. Once I enter a meditative flow state, the mantras seem to emerge naturally and uniformly across the artwork.

When we release judgment, silence the mind, and immerse ourselves in the process, we are assisted in authentic and heart-centred expression. Art is not born of us but through us.

Over time, I have come to recognise that it is our divine duty to create and share inspiration. By honouring our own creativity, we inspire others to celebrate and create as well.

My purpose is to create reflective works that engage the soul and celebrate the beauty of this human journey. My hope is that my art serves as a mirror reflecting your universal light, your human essence, and your timeless divinity.

The book, featuring 30 paintings, was published by Kashi House to commemorate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Inspired by Guru Nanak's concept of Oneness, the book explores how Mantra Art can encourage an inner journey toward understanding one's divine nature. Each painting is accompanied by personal reflections describing how the artwork contributed to my own growth, healing, and experience of peace.

Since Khalsa Aid has been instrumental in providing humanitarian support around the world, I am donating 100% of my author proceeds to the charity.

My wish was to become part of this incredible movement and emulate its values of love, equality, and selfless service. While I could not always join their work physically, supporting them through this project felt like the next best way to contribute and serve humanity.
